You can edit text at any point and the reader will reread the line you've just changed - so you can hear what it sounds like. This is very important on a long document - being able to leave and get back it without having to start over. It keeps track of where you left off in a document you are listening to, and when you restart the program it goes to where you left off. Not only is NaturalReader Software easy to use, it includes two voices and can use the other voices you already have on your computer. The short video below, shows how it works. I downloaded the free version and gave it a try. Then I found what I needed in NaturalReader Software - a text to voice reader / editor that can open Docx as well as PDF files and other formats as well. While there are many text-to-voice programs, I had to have one that could open and edit DocX files - and that requirement eliminated most of the ones I found. But searching for paragraph style gallery produces no results.įrustrated that such an expensive program was so limited and hard to use, I gave up on its text to voice feature and started looking for an alternative. Under paragraph settings, it said to open the paragraph style gallery. The help box suggested I look up paragraph settings instead which I did. For example, after Word totally messed the formatting of my book, I searched Word's onboard help for 'paragraph styles'. Word clones like LibreOffice and OpenOffice Writer have no problems with large text files. In the program documentation, it says don't use Word with large text files (like books), because it will tend to crash. I can't think of any other way to describe it. No one else uses that format, not even Windows 10 narrator. You also can't use natural voices from other sources because Word uses what Microsoft calls the 'TTS Mobile' format for text to speech voices.

Word text to voice limits you to just the voices that Microsoft offers for Word (three so far), and you can't use any of the many natural sounding voices that Microsoft offers for free with Windows. While Word has a voice to text option, it doesn't work that well.
My book is in Word's Docx format - even though I wrote it using the free LibreOffice Writer - and I needed a text to voice program that could open and speak Word Docx files. I wrote that because, at the time, I was trying to proofread my latest book by hearing the words spoken back to me.
